have you thought about a possibility that he was traveling in time only in his mind while he was actually in an mental institute (like his father) and created his "illness" so he can live in a better life then the real ones only not for real.
i believe that when the doctor told him about it he realized it and decided to make a finale attepmt to correct his life in his mind so he can stay locked in his mind forever in a beeter world.
